View W of a large cist (L) & the two almost parallel double stone rows at Merrivale on Dartmoor, Devon, England, UK. There is a transverse blocking stone & the remains of a kerbed cairn at the E end of the N (R) row. The S (L) row has a triangular terminal slab at the E end & a central cairn circle (ring cairn) with a cist. To the S is a cist sealed by a massive slab which has had a gatepost cut from it. The capstone was lifted In 1895 when a flint scraper, a flint flake & a polishing stone (whetstone) were found. A prehistoric complex in use c 3,000-1,000 BC: the rows are considered to be late Neolithic, the settlement & some of the other ceremonial remains to be Bronze Age. A C19th water channel (leat) runs between the two avenues.
