A monochrome illustration of the Spanish ship of the line, "San Hermenegildo", a 112 cannon vessel launched in Havana, Cuba in 1789. During the Battle of Algeciras Bay in July 1801, the vessel was destroyed when the "Superb" a British ship fired and struck the San Hermenegildo. Another Spanish ship, the Real Carlos caught fire and the two Spanish ships confused one another for British ships and began a furious duel until a sudden gust of wind brought the two ships together and entangled their rigging. The Hermenegildo also caught fire and the two ships exploded.

A monochrome illustration of the Spanish ship of the line, "San Hermenegildo", a 112 cannon vessel launched in Havana, Cuba in 1789. During the Battle of Algeciras Bay in July 1801, the vessel was destroyed. It occurred when the "Superb" a British ship sailed alongside the Spanish "Real Carlos" on her starboard side. Firing on the Real Carlos, some shot passed her and struck the San Hermenegildo sailing on the opposite side. The Real Carlos caught fire and in the darkness the two Spanish ships confused one another for British ships and began a furious duel until a sudden gust of wind brought the two ships together and entangled their rigging. The Hermenegildo also caught fire and the two ships exploded.
