Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801). 1854 illustration of the Swiss theologist, poet and writer Johann Kaspar Lavater. Lavater is best known for popularising the pseudoscience of physiognomy, the practice of assessing personality traits from the appearance of a person's face. He also wrote various poems, including Christliche Lieder (1776-1780), Jesus Messias (1780) and Joseph von Arimathia (1794).
