Such a stand-ard will be appreciated by the tubing mills and will fa-cilitate deliveries and stocking. The recommendation isintended to apply to future production and is based on asurvey of present practice which indicated that the 1%,! 1. 2. 2!4, 2^, 2s and 3-in. pipe sizes were most gen-erally used. The majority of steering gear connecting rods usedare made with separate ball studs as this permits moresatisfactory heat treatment. These studs are now madeto many designs, differing but slightly in detail, but aremuch more expensive than standardized studs would following table of proposed standard dimensions istherefore recommended:. It is recommended that the present S. A. E. standardfor square shaft fittings be revised so that the shaftend and nut dimensions conform to the shaft end andnut dimensions of the present S. A. Universal Joint Hubs In order to obtain better interchangeability betweenuniversal joints and transmissions, the Parts and Fit-tings Division recommends the adoption as S. A. Practice of the universal joint hub dimen-sions given in the accompanying table. The dimensionsspecified are of importance to the transmission manu-facturers by eliminating many present variations inthese parts, and to the transmission purchasers by mak-ing a
