Thescientific name of this species is Spharagemon wyomingianum. Bolls Locust In the chapter on the habitat of the Orthoptera I havepresented two landscape views. In the dry, sandy area shownin the foreground in the second picture. Bolls locust was acommon frequenter. On warm, sunny days in the fall it wasoften seen exercising its wings in flight. The males make arustling sound with their wings while hovering in one place inmid-air. This performance is very similar to that displayedby the Carolina locust. In the open woodlands and dry pastures,or on the connecting borders where these two areas meet. Bollslocust was found in the latter part of the summer and fall, butit never occurred in great numbers. At times the mottledsand locust is quite likely to be confused with Bolls locust. ECOLOGY—INTERPRETATION OF ENVIRONMENT 303. The Mottled Band Locust {Spharagemon wyomingianum). Topand bottom figures, females; middle figure to right, male. 364 NATURE SKETCHES IN TEMPERATE AMERICA The former can readily be distingushed from its near relativeby the plain, coral-red hind tibiae, which are paler at the the other hand, in Bolls locust these. structures have adistinct light ring at the basal third, which is followed by acontrasting black one, and the apical half only is coral-redlike the preceding species. The plate photographic illustration shows two individuals, including the male below and the female above. Identificationwill be facilitated if this plate is compared with the platedepicting the mottled sand locust.
