Inside the Citadel (Castel St Mary) of Old Town of Budva, Montenegro

In the southern part of the town, at its highest point, the town fortress of Kastel was erected, which is now known as the Citadela. The town walls start and end at this point. The fortress was mentioned for the first time in ancient chronicles in 1425. For some time, it was the seat of the Metropolitan of Zeta, after he left his original base of Prevlaka. During the expansion and reconstruction of the fortress in the 19th century, the small church of Santa Maria de Castelo was torn down, and a larger army garrison was stationed in the fortress. For a long time, the Citadela was state-owned, and it was used as a stage for the plays of the “Theatre City” festival for a while, it is now mainly used for hospitality purposes.
