J. is now playing a very im-portant part in the transportation of pas-sengers and freight, and will be used asa motive power and more as timegoes on. We have the street ear, themultiple-unit trains consisting of severalears coupled together and controlled by. FIG. 1. DAVIDSONS MOTOR, 1842. one man at the head of the train, and theelectric locomotive. It is interesting toreview the progress of electric tractionand to consider how the present designof electric apparatus was reached. The electric motor dates back to 1821when Faraday showed a simple experi-ment. The end of a bar magnet wasprojected through the bottom of a cuppartially filled with mercury in whichwas dipped the end of a wire which wassuspended so that same could move terminal of a battery was connectedto the wire, the other terminal makingconnection with the mercury. This al-lowed current to pass through the wireand rotation of the wire took placearound the pole of the magnet and con-tinued until the circuit was opened. Further experiments were made and in1831 Prof. Henry of the Smithsonian In-stitution built a very small engine makinguse of this discovery of Farada
