Laem Promthep (Brahma's Cape) Phuket Thailand

The island of Phuket, Thailand's largest, is among the world’s most popular holiday destinations. Known as the 'Pearl of the South', Phuket is nestled amidst the translucent waters of the Andaman Sea, in the southern part of Thailand. Magnificent mountain ranges, white sandy beaches and luxury accommodations have made this island a leisure traveller's paradise. The name 'Phuket' is derived from a Malay word, 'Bukit', which means mountain. The island was formerly known as Tha-Laang or Ta-lang; a derivative of the old Malay term 'Telong', meaning 'Cape'. Phuket is primarily made up of mountains, with a large mountain range stretching from north to south in the western part of the island. Nearly 70% of Phuket is covered by forests and the Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary, in the north of the island, features a 20 square kilometre (8 square mile) land area of protected rainforest. The Sirinat National Park, on the north-western coast, protects an area of 90 square kilometres (35 square miles), including the Nai Yang beach, where sea turtles lay their eggs. The western coast of Phuket is home to some of the most beautiful beaches of the world - the island's principal tourist attraction. Nearing the southernmost point of the island is Laem Promthep (Brahma's Cape), a popular sunset viewpoint of Phuket. Patong Beach is the primary tourist area in the island and most of Phuket's nightlife and bargain shopping are available here. Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Nai Harn Beach and Bang Tao Beach are the other popular beaches on the island.
