St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London. Church designed by James Gibbs 1720, completed 1726 in the English Baroque style. The octagonal steeple , with a delicate concave spire of four octagonal stages, each with a circular opening. Gibbs wrote that the separate elements of a steeple should 'gradually diminish, and pass from one Form to another without confusion'.
