A well dressing in the porch of the Crooked Spire (or, to give it its proper name, the parish church of St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield) depicting the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Chesterfield. Well dressings are produced to give thanks for the gift of water using only natural materials and may date back to pagan Celtic times, although now adopted by the Christian church. Chesterfield's are one of the last of the well dressings of the season, staged in September.
