Frederick William Beechey (1796-1856), British geographer. Beechey entered the Royal Nay at the age of 12, and saw active service during the Napoleonic Wars. After the peace, he served in Buchan's expedition to the Arctic and Smyth's survey of the African coast of the Mediterranean Sea. With his brother he made a land survey of this coast. In 1825 he was given command of HMS Blossom, and used her to explore the Bering Strait. In 1835 he was sent to survey the coast of South America, and in 1837-47 made detailed charts of the coast of Ireland. in 1855 he was elected president of the Royal Geographical Society.
