FIELD MARSHAL MONTGOMERY (MISC) - During the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940, Field Marshal Montgomery, then commanding the 3rd. Div, and members of his staff were forced to abandon their kit at a small Trapish Monastery near Poperinghe, where they spent one night. After they left, the monks hid the kit and this week after the district had been liberated by the Canadians, a member of the Field Marshal's staff was able to return and retrieve the kit.
