Turning to the railway companies owning linessouth of the Thames, we find that one of their mainobjects is to carry traffic between the Metropolisand the sea. The London and South-Western owesmuch of its importance to its ownership of theSouthampton Docks, and it has a fleet of fifteen steam-ships trading between that port and the ChannelIslands and France, the South-Western route viaSouthampton and Havre being a favourite one withvisitors to and from Paris.
