Blacksmith at work, 14th-century illustration. The forge and its fire are at left. This fragment is from a 'Book of Hours' illuminated manuscript, produced in England in around the 1320s. The book of hours is a Christian devotional book popular in the Middle Ages and is the most common type of surviving mediaeval illuminated manuscript.
