In doingthis the paint will look more like the varied silks. For the stems, take the darning needle and roll it throughthe paint until it is thickly covered,; then pass the needleheavily down the middle of the stem, which will leave thepaint more to the sides. The needle is used in the samemanner for ferns, using the smaller one for the finer 294 OUR HOMES AND THEIR ADORNMENTS. Of course, in doing ferns or leaves of a decided green, suchas those of lilly-of-the-valley, the greens are used alone; buta touch of red or yellow may be added here and there after-wards to give character to the work. It will be a decided improvement to Kensington work if,while the paint is moist, to sprinkle diamond dust over thepiece. Let the velvet remain on the board till dry, andafterwards it can be thoroughly dusted with a whisk with-out injury.
