More than half of Scotland s malt whisky distilleries can be found in the broad valley of the River Spey Within a 15 kilometre radius of the Speyside town of Aberlour lies the heart of Scotland s Malt Whisky Trail home to two dozen of the most legendary names in whisky including Glenfiddich Glenlivet Macallan and Glen Grant Most of the region s distilleries date back to the mid 1800s when in an effort to reduce smuggling and feed tax coffers the commercial production of whisky was legalized The history of whisky making in the region pre dates its legal incarnation by some three centuries In the 1700s an estimated 14 000 illicit stills were in operation throughout Scotland several of which can be traced today in the pedigree of some of Scotland s most noble whisky houses On the edge of town is Scotland s largest malt whisky distillery the Glenfiddich Founded in 1887 the honey stone buildings of the distillery are set amidst immaculate grounds A visit to Glenfiddich includes a classy video presentation and a tour that charts the various steps of the distilling process The tour ends with a free dram of Scotland s best known malt From Glenfiddich the Speyside Way courses along the tree canopied banks of the River Fiddich to the village of Craigellachie Here the trail passes the century old Craigellachie Hotel and its celebrated Quaich Bar which boasts more than 430 single malt whiskies ranging in price from around 6 to 360 a glass for a 40 year old Glenfarclas and then to the Speyside Cooperage a working barrel making facility and museum where visitors can watch coopers and apprentices practising the time honoured craft of oak barrel repair
