Specijic Characters. Evergreen. Leaves oval, lanceolate, slightly glaucous beneath. Flowers in peduncled axillary groups.—Spreagd, Syst. Description. HE Carolina Laurel, al-though it sometimes at-tains a height of sixty or seventy feet, in its natu-ral habitat, with a trunk fifteen or twenty inchesin diameter, rarely exhibits a regular form; itsstem generally being crooked, and divided intoseveral thick limbs, eight, ten, or twelve feetabove the ground. Upon the trunks of old trees,the bark is thick, and deeply furrowed; but onyoung stocks and branches, it is smooth, and ofa beautiful green colour. The leaves are aboutsix inches long, alternate, oval-acuminate, glau-cous on the lower surface, and evergreen. Themale flowers come out in April or May, in longclusters from the axils of the leaves; and thefemale flowers occur in loose bunches, on ratherlong, red peduncles. The berries, which are of an oval form, and of a rich, dark-blue, grow in red cups, and occur two, and sometimes three together. Varieties.
