Testing the View Finder. Although in the better class of appara-tus the accuracy of the finder may com-monly be relied upon, it is frequently thecase that the field of view included by thefinder is smaller or larger than thatthrowm on the focussing screen. Wherethis is suspected, the finder should betested in order that the defect may beremedied or allowed for. In the case of ahand-camera of the ordinary magazinetype, open the door at the back and place. greater brilliancy and vigour in the re-sulting negative are obtainable by theiruse. There is a good deal of truth in this,and many prominent workers still use slowplates almost exclusively ; but it has oflate come to be largely acknowledged thata greater softness and delicacy of detail,with a better and more pleasing renderingof atmosphere and tone values, aresecured by the employment of rapidplates. Opinion is, however, somewhatdivided on this point, and it may besafely stated that, provided the correctexposure is given, thoroughly satisfactorywork may be done with either.
