Opposite Codaletthe Font de Lliteramay still be valley comprisesthe territories of Co-dalet and Taurinya,with the abbey,founded in 878 or 879,and one of the mostflourishing in the dis-trict. The Abbot wasaccorded episcopalhonours, and hadjurisdiction over fifteen parishes, of which he was tem-poral lord also. Its reputation forsanctity attracted distinguished neophytes, as, forinstance, S. Pietro Orseolo, the sainted Doge of Venice,who was so carried away by the eloquence of AbbotGuarin during his visit to Venice at the end of the tenthcentury that he followed him hither, notwithstandingthe prayers of his family and the Senate. A legendrelates that he had a cell outside the convent, where hespent much time in prayer, returning to sleep withinthe walls. One night he found the gate shut, and couldnot enter, so he set himself to pray, when two angelsappeared with a ladder, by the aid of which he scaledthe wall ! He died in 977. Many gifts were made to the monastery by theCounts of Ronssillon, of Besalu, and Barcelona. Acopy of the original donation of Count Seniof redus, madein 1267, exists.
