Infected umbilical hernia scar. Close-up of an infected scar on the navel of an 84-year-old man, 2 weeks after an operation to correct an umbilical hernia. An umbilical hernia occurs when a loop of the intestines protrudes through a weak area in the abdominal wall behind the navel. Surgical repair, in which the opening in the wall is stitched up and strengthened with sutures, is necessary if the hernia is large or disfiguring. The scar will need to be kept clean. The infection may be treated with antibiotic drugs.
