Rosemary leaf upper surface (Rosmarinus officinalis), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The upper leaf surface contains numerous multicellular, glandular and non-glandular trichomes (branched hairs). Shown here are numerous short glandular trichomes (round) and one non-glandular branched trichome. The small glandular trichomes (round) are seen apposed closely to the leaf surface. They contain the volatile oil of the rosemary plant. Leaf trichomes serve as a protective function against pests and also helps to reduce leaf evaporation. Rosemary is a woody, perennial herb with fragrant needle-like leaves. Rosemary is extremely high in iron, calcium, and Vitamin B6. Carnosic acid, found in rosemary, may shield the brain from free radicals, lowering the risk of strokes and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Lou Gehrig's.
