Archives of medicine : A bi-monthly journal devoted to original communications on medicine, surgery, and their special branches. . tter of the amount of pressure necessary to de- THE SPH YGMOGRAPH IN MEDICINE. 18 5 velop the pulse-trace had been neglected, and observers weresearching for pulse traces which should be considered as pathog-nomonic, or diagnostic of certain pathological conditions. Nowthat the significance of the elements of the pulse-trace is de-termined, and that the importance of measuring the amount ofpressure employed to develop the pulse-trace is appreciated, andthat it is realized that the pulse-trace is seldom pathognomonic ordiagnostic of diseased conditions, and that the inferences ofthe observer must be based upon the significance of each factor ofthe pulse-trace, the amount of pressure employed, and the condi-tions under which the observation is taken, the sphygmograph isproving to be of the greatest practical value in medicine. Three sphygmographs in particular claim the attention of theprofession at present, and they bear the names of their respectiveinventors, Marey, Mahomed, and fig. r. mareys sphygmograph. Mareys instrument is represented in Fig. i, and I shall assumethat it is so well known to the profession that a minute descriptionis unnecessary.
