Nadar, French balloonist, in a posed studio publicity portrait from the 1860s. This image was intended to advertise Nadar's ballooning ventures. The 'basket' is too small, but the binoculars and anchor added authenticity to the scene. Gaspard-Felix Tournachon (1820-1910) was a French balloonist and photographer known by the pseudonym Nadar. His ballooning exploits included taking the first aerial photographs in the 1850s, and building a large balloon ('Le Geant', The Giant) in 1863. This balloon had a huge size of 6000 cubic metres. Nadar set up his fourth photographic studio in Marseilles in 1895 when in his seventies. He returned to Paris in 1909 and died there the following year. This carte-de-visite albumen silver print dates from around 1863.
