A pair of British Railways standard designs, the 9F 2-10-0 and BR Standard Class 4-6-0 abandoned at Carnforth after a short work

A pair of British Railways standard designs, the 9F 2-10-0 and BR Standard Class 4-6-0 abandoned at Carnforth after a short working life. All the BR Standard working designs were intended for mixed traffic work with the exception of these 9F heavy mineral class 2-10-0s, but paradoxically the 9Fs were so superbly balanced that they proved to be the best mixed traffic example of all the Standards and they began to be used on fast passenger schedules as well as heavy freight. Speeds of 90mph had been reported until this exciting but theoretically dangerous practice was forbidden.
