Mr. Smith, whois a native of Caithness, studied at Edin-burgh University and New College, and soon after the completion of his course hewas appointed to take charge of InverurieFree Church for three months after thedeparture of Rev. P. W. Minto. Whenthere name came under the notice ofthe Greyfriars congregation, with the re-sult that he finally became minister of thechurch. Mr. Smiths task was from thefirst beset by not a few difficulties, but hehas remained at his post, working withearnestness and fidelity along purelyevangelical lines. The outstanding featureof ministry has been the alteration andimprovement scheme, which was begun inNovember, 1900, and completed in Septem-ber, 1901. By this scheme Greyfriars con-gregation was provided with what was. Rev. William Smith. practically a new church, and put in pos-session of buildings well equipped in everyway according to modern ideas. The oldchurch had become not only antiquated instyle, but almost unfit for occupation, whileno other meeting-place was available forclasses and societies except the small, dingyvestry. The alterations provided not onlyfor a comfortable church, but also for suffi-cient hall accommodation underneath, andthe total outlay amounted to about £ assistance was received from thePresbyterys East-End Scheme, and by theefforts of the minister and congregation theexpense has now been almost wholly de-frayed.
