Image of an extra-tropical low-pressure storm taken from the Space Shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-49 (7-16 May 1992). This system formed over the Gulf Stream near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in the United States, and is seen here near Bermuda at about 32 degrees north latitude and 59 degrees west longitude. In this case the low- pressure area developed rapidly into the occluded spiral stage (centre). Winds within these systems may reach velocities as high as 90km per hour and produce waves 4-6 metres high.
