The appellation issupposed to derive from the following names conditions, to wit:The stream which reaching this point had been running north-easterly then changes to northwesterly with considerable in-crease of declivity thus creating a situation known on otherrivers as a Chute or Shute. Isaac Horner was gianted by ye Town in 16T7-8 and againin 1684-5 ye priviledge of ye stream at ye Beaver Swamp by yeSho, so called, to set up a Fulling Mill &c., &c. Sundry otheradventurers made further improvements, also John Dewsburybuilt a brick house and, failing in business, merited the remon-strance of his Quaker brethren because of his outrunning J^ Matinecock Meetixg House Oyster Bay, X. Y. Built 17-25 Old Matinecock 11 Samuel Birdsall in 1695 purchased the northerly part of theHorner Grant and erected another mill which was in later timesknown as George Frosts and still later as Silas Cocks Mill. Kantuck Mills were built before 1800, the upper one, beinga saw mill, by the Hawxhurst Family, and the lower, a gristmill, by Samuel Cock, Jr. Indian John Rmiipus lived on what was called his island inthe midst of the swamp which by that time was known as ShuSwamp. He was supposed to be a descendant of the Arumpaswhose name appears on the Seven Purchase Deeds. The Piping Rock is on the north side of the footway fromthe town to Musketa Cove by wa} of the Shu, so called, situateat or near the southeast corner of Mr. Pates property andjust opposite to the entrance of
