There is a chronic ankylosing inflammationaffecting primarily the ossification of ligaments and pre-vertebral coverings of the spine, a form of ossifying periosti-tis, which binds the vertebrae firmly together. It may be a partof a general rheumatoid arthritis involving other joints,but under the name spondylitis deformans the spine aloneis understood to be involved and there is a proliferation ofbone in this region as exostoses. It may be a sequela ofacute inflammatory rheumatism, traumatism, gonorrhoeain young male adults or other infections but is more commonin women past middle life.
