Soda springs. Aerial photograph of soda springs (circular, white) in the salt marshes of Lake Natron, Tanzania. These springs are highly alkaline, containing soda (sodium carbonate), salt (sodium carbonate) and magnesite (magnesium carbonate) mineral deposits. The drying soda forms these eddy shapes (whirlpools) in the marshes. Also seen is a network that has been traced out. This is caused by water, from the springs, travelling along cracks in the marsh and evaporating to leave behind salty deposits.
