After afew minutes the opisthotonos gives place to certainfairly constant and characteristic movements. Ofthese, perhaps the most common is a rapid flexionof the upper part of the body ; the head is thrownrapidly forward, nearly striking the knees, and thenviolently back upon the pillow. Quite as commonin this country is the violent throwing of the wholebody from side to side. Again, the body may remainquiet and the legs be rapidly carried to the verticalposition and then brought violently down upon thebed. These movements of the limbs are usuallybilateral, but occasionally only one side is the whole body is raised, resting only on Plaie Fig. i.
