Airman 1st Class Scott Gaffey, assigned to the non-destructive inspection (NDI) section of the Utah Air National Guard's 151st Maintenance Group, cleans a Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) bench as part of his daily maintenance duties. MPI is used to detect surface and near-surface flaws in ferromagnetic materials and is primarily used for crack detection. NDI specialists, like Gaffey, use this method to analyze the wear in metal content on engine lubricating oil and other fluids, as well as detect flaws such as cracks, voids and heat damage on aircraft parts utilizing various test equipment.
