Mont Saint-Michel is a granitic rocky island about 960 meters in circumference located east of the mouth of the Couesnon river, in the Manche department in Normandy, and whose name refers directly to the Archangel Saint Michael. Before the year 709, it was known as "Mount Tomb". Throughout the Middle Ages, it was commonly called "Mont Saint-Michel at the peril of the sea" (Mons Sancti Michaeli in periculo mari).
