The ITER (Technological and Renewable Energy Institute: Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables) is promoting applied research in the field of renewable energies. Created by the Tenerife Cabildo (Island Authority) as the Research Centre in 1990, it offers the public visits to its facilities located in an ideal spot next to the Montaña Pelada Nature Park in the municipal district of Granadilla de Abona. Either with a guide or without, the Institute offers visitors the possibility of getting to know Renewable Energies, the Environment and Bio-climatology at first hand. With three wind farms, a wind tunnel, numerous photovoltaic installations adding up to over 24 installed MW, an open-air technological walk and a visitors’ centre, the Iter offers the perfect setting to get to know renewable energies, spreading knowledge of both its activities and the different fields into which it does research. Structured in three main areas, the Iter has the aim of making use of the environmental, strategic and socio-economic advantages of renewable sources for the production of energy. It also features a bioclimatic development of 24 detached houses built according to bioclimatic standards using recycled and recyclable materials etc. and optimizing the environmental conditions (integration of renewable energy, water treatment, waste disposal, etc.), which allows visitors to experience the world of Bioclimatism during their stay. In addition, homes are offered for short-term vacation stays, allowing visitors to enjoy a break in one of these unique houses.
