GASSION, John de, marshal of France,was bortl in 1609 at Pau, where his father waspresident of the parliament. At the age ofsixteen he entered into the gendarmes of theprince of Piedmont; and in 1627, and two after, he served under the duke de Rohan in thecivil wars on the carviriist side* to which lie wasalways attached. When the great Gustavusred Germany, Gassier! joined him, an I. GAS ( 325 ) G A S was made captain of his body-guard. He wasafterwards raised to the rank of a field-officerin the cavalry, in which post he performed es-sential services in many actions, and especiallyat the battle of Leipsic- Gustavus, who highlyesteemed his valour and fidelity, would havedistinguished him by some signal recompence,had he not soon after lost his life at that event, Gassion returned to Francewith his regiment, and entered under the mar-shal de la Force in Lorrain, where he renderedhimself the terror of the enemy.
