The Hardy Monument by moonlight. A memorial to Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy who served with Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. Dorset, England, UK.

The Hardy Monument is a 72-foot high monument which was erected in 1844, by public subscription, in memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy, who served as flag captain to Admiral Lord Nelson, and commanded the flagship HMS Victory at the decisive Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Lord Nelson was shot by a French marksman during the battle, and as he lay dying of his wounds the redoubtable Hardy was at his side. The story goes that the last words that Nelson uttered were “ Kiss me Hardy”.
