In asecluded corner of the beautiful cemetery of Cherbourg, sleeppeacefully the American seamen killed on June 27, 1S64, in thememorable sea fight off Cherbourg between the United Statessloop-of-war Kcarsargc and the Confederate cruiser honor of the American squadron the graves of these men,almost forgotten by their own people, had been decorated andmade beautiful by gentle hands and a sympathetic delicacy char-acteristic of the French people.*.
