Smallpox research, 1960s. Light micrograph of Variola (smallpox) virus pocks on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of an embryonic chicken. Smallpox is an infectious viral disease that killed tens of thousands every year before it was eradicated by a worldwide vaccination program in the 1960s and 1970s. It produces characteristic haemorrhagic pocks. Like other poxviruses it grows in a variety of cell cultures. This image was obtained in 1967 during research at the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC is one of two locations worldwide that retain samples of the smallpox virus.
