The northern regions are locked inperpetual ice, and support no living country was visited as early as 982, by Eric Rauda, a Norwegian, whose adventures are narrated in the first chapter of thepresent work. He estabfished a settlement at BrattaHd. near aninlet, which he denominated Erics Sound. His companions foundedHeriulfsness, Rafn, and other places—nanjes w^hich are still ex-tant in Greenland. Eric remained three years in his colony, and,on returnmg to Iceland, published a pompous and false account ofthe new-found region, naming it Greenland.
