Silver birch trees in Holm fen, in England
Still today, 160 years after the drainage of the nearby Whitllesey Mere, evidence of the continuing wasting away of the peat can be seen in Holme fen woods . As the peat is still shrinking the roots of the trees become exposed, making them unstable. Many trees can be seen leaning at odd angles untill they eventually fall down. Much of the 266 hectares reserve has become covered with birch woodland
