St Mary-le-Strand, nave ceiling; by James Gibbs 1714-1717.

St Mary-le-Strand. One of the 'Fifty New Churches' or 'Queen Anne Churches', built by James Gibbs 1714-1717 in the English Baroque style. The plasterwork in the nave is attributed to Wilkins: the shallow barrel-vaulted ceiling has ornate coffering in a tightly packed expanse of squares, triangles and lozenges, arranged geometrically. In 1718 the expense of the decoration so alarmed the Commisioners that they demanded a 'stop should be put to the extravagt. Carvings within'.
