One gradually reduces the percentagesbeginning at the end of half an hour, until 40 or 50 mm. isreached, at which point the patient may be carried forhours. As has been before stated this type of anaesthesia is con-stant and does not attempt to vary its level according tothe manipulations of the surgeon. The anaesthetist must be continually alive to the patientand the apparatus, however, for trouble may arise in eitheror both. This trouble will be more difficult to detect andmust be met more promptly than where a more simplemethod is employed. The second method, in which a small volume of veryconcentrated ether i
