Conceptual computer illustration of an artificial blood cell. The main function of red blood cells (erythrocytes) is to distribute oxygen to body tissues and to carry waste carbon dioxide back to the lungs. Synthetic blood cells, or respirocytes, hypothetically would have the same function as red blood cells and would be used to treat blood conditions such as sickle cell anaemia, respiratory diseases, foetal asphyxia, and cardiovascular disorders.
