Great reedmace seed. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a great reedmace seed (Typha latifolia). Otherwise known as the common bulrush, broadleaf cattail, common cattail, cooper's reed and cumbungi. This robust perennial is native to the UK and many parts of the world including America and Europe. It is a wetlands species and can dominate reed-swamps, especially where there is silting and decay of organic matter in slow-moving rivers, ponds, lakes and canals. Considered in some countries to be an invasive and noxious weed. Magnification x337 (x80 at 10cm wide).
