Self-replicating chemical pattern. Blue spots grow (centre of left border) and decay (upper right corner) in time, in a computer-modelled chemical reaction. Such chemical processes may govern the patterns we see in nature, from snowflakes to leopard spots. This model was developed by Dr John Pearson at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, to establish patterns created by chemical \reaction- diffusion\" systems. In a simulation of an iodate- ferrocyanide-sulfite chemical which is diffused through a gel, intricate self-replicating patterns are created. Pearson identified 12 exact patterns, including these self-replicating dots."
