Portrait of a Philosopher, about 400. Additional Info: This man’s long hair and beard and his intent gaze mark him as a philosopher. A chiton covers his left shoulder and part of the upper chest. Although the portrait is based on a Greek original of about 300 , details of the carving (notably the treatment of the eyes, with the pupils shown as concentric circles) suggest that this is a Roman copy of around 400.
