Photograph by David Coleman. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is a monumental structure located in Ba Dinh Square, central Hanoi, Vietnam. It houses the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh, the founding father of modern Vietnam and a key figure in the country's struggle for independence. The mausoleum was inspired by Lenin's Mausoleum in Moscow and is constructed from materials sourced across Vietnam. It stands as a significant national symbol and a site of great historical importance. The building is a massive, imposing structure made of granite, with a portico of 36 granite columns and the words "Chủ tịch Hồ-Chí-Minh" (President Ho Chi Minh) inscribed above the entrance. Inside, Ho Chi Minh's body lies in a glass case in the central hall. The mausoleum is part of a larger complex that includes the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh's stilt house, and the One Pillar Pagoda. Visitors to the mausoleum must adhere to strict protocols, reflecting the reverence with which Ho Chi Minh is regarded in Vietnam. The site attracts numerous visitors, both locals and tourists, who come to pay their respects and learn about Vietnam's history and the legacy of Ho Chi Minh.
