Hegraduated from the highschool at Hampton,Iowa, and began railwaywork April 1, 1881, withthe Illinois Central atWaterloo, Iowa, as ma-chinist apprentice. Afterserving an apprenticeshipof four years he workedtwo years as journey-man machinist, and inApril, 1887, was maderoundhouse foreman atClinton, 111. He re-mained in that positionfor five years, when hewas transferred toWaterloo as machineshop foreman, and inOctober. 1896, he waspromoted to generalforeman in charge of the
