Catalytic converter. This device fits to a car's exhaust and converts the toxic emissions into less toxic substances. It uses oxidising reactions to convert carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water and a reduction reaction to convert nitrogen oxides to nitrogen. Catalytic converters can only be used with unleaded fuels.
