Breast cancer surgery. Image 5 of 9. Surgeon moving a flap of latissimus dorsi back muscle into the breast cavity during breast cancer surgery. A metal retractor (upper right) is holding back the skin. The surgeon has just completed a modified radical mastectomy, where the entire breast tissue and surrounding lymph nodes were removed in order to remove malignant (cancerous) tumours. After the muscle flap has been moved to its new position, a prosthetic implant will be inserted to complete the breast reconstruction stage of the operation. For a series showing this procedure, see images M122/497
