Hilda Mary Isabel Petrie (1871-1957), British archaeologist and Egyptologist, descending an Egyptian tomb shaft by rope ladder. Born Hilda Urlin, she married British Egyptologist Flinders Petrie in 1896. They left for Egypt the day after their marriage, with Hilda's role being to make accurate drawings of the artefacts and carvings discovered during their expeditions. Flinders Petrie had begun excavations in Egypt from 1881. He discovered that there had been Greek colonies in Egypt. He also devised a way of dating finds by the design of the pottery found. In 1894 he founded the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Photographed in around the period 1897 to 1898.
